PURE SMILES TOOTH SEALANTS

Protecting the health of your teeth is important to us. At Pure Smiles, we use Tooth Sealants to create a protective barrier on teeth that have a risk for tooth decay. We typically identify teeth that require sealants during your routine Teeth Cleanings and Checkups appointments.

What are Tooth Sealants?

Sealants are dental restorations that are used to protect the enamel surface of the teeth. The chewing surfaces of the premolar and molar teeth have deep grooves, known as fissures, that are very difficult, if not impossible to clean with a regular toothbrush. Teeth with deep fissures are very susceptible to tooth decay because plaque begins to accumulate in these areas, and the acid created from the bacteria in the plaque attacks the enamel, causing cavities.

How Tooth Sealants Protect the Teeth

Sealants are made from a dental resin that is very similar to white filling material. After the surface of the tooth is cleaned and prepared with an etching solution, the tooth sealant is placed on the biting surface of the tooth. A high-intensity light is used to cure the tooth sealant, making it durable enough to withstand chewing and biting forces.

How Long will Tooth Sealants Last?

Sealants have been used to prevent cavities for over 30 years. When taken care of, tooth sealants can last as long as a white filling. During your dental checkup, we will evaluate your tooth sealants to ensure they are functioning as they should. If any cracks or voids are detected, we will recommend the replacement of the tooth sealant to ensure bacteria is not able to invade the tooth.
